Disposable vs. Refillable Vape Devices: What's the Difference?

By Tobacco & More · Updated

Walk into any of our stores and you'll see three broad kinds of vape devices: disposables, pod systems and refillable kits. They differ mainly in how much setup and upkeep they involve. This guide explains the formats so you know what to ask about in store — it isn't a recommendation for any particular product.

Disposable vapes

A disposable vape arrives pre-filled with e-liquid and has a built-in battery. There's nothing to fill, assemble or replace: you use it until the e-liquid runs out and then replace the whole device. Many newer disposables include a charging port so the battery can last as long as the e-liquid does.

Because they contain lithium batteries, disposables shouldn't simply go in household trash in many areas. Check your local e-waste or battery recycling guidelines.

Pod systems

Pod systems pair a small rechargeable battery with a replaceable pod. Some pods come pre-filled and are swapped out when empty; others are refillable, so you add your own e-liquid and replace the pod or its coil when needed.

Pod systems commonly use nicotine salt e-liquids, although some accept freebase e-liquid as well. When you buy replacement pods, make sure they match your device model.

Refillable kits

Refillable kits use a battery (built-in or removable) and a separate tank with a replaceable coil. They generally hold more e-liquid than pods, and some models offer adjustable settings.

The trade-off is a little more upkeep: refilling the tank, replacing coils and, for removable batteries, using a compatible charger. Coils are specific to each tank, so bring your device or its model name when buying replacements.

Questions to ask in store

Which replacement pods or coils fit my device? Which e-liquid formats and nicotine strengths are available for it? How does it charge? Store staff can answer these for the products currently on the shelf. Selection varies by location, so contact your nearest store if you're looking for a specific device.
